To produce a ‘simple, universally friendly’ video with an ‘emotional connection’ to encourage the viewer to sign a petition making swift-bricks compulsory in newbuild homes.
I was part of the team of The Why agency creating illustrations and animations the artwork, look and feel for a national campaign for 'Swift Bricks' (nesting boxes for Swifts). Part of the Feather Speech Campaign created by nature writer and bird conservationist, Hannah Bourne-Taylor.
Client: Hannah Bourne-Taylor / The Why
Initial sketches aimed for a more classic cartoon-character bird with big eyes and expression. Ultimately, a more realistic look was decided upon.
Various options for colour schemes, focusing on a bright, fun palette.
A full-bleed, colourful image showing the setup of a street where the story would take place - and further colour experimentation.
The final colour scheme is subdued and natural, with hints of children's classic TV colour schemes.
In earlier versions of the storyboard (subsequently cut for time reasons) the Swift was shown eating, and this dragonfly was the unfortunate victim!
The Swift nest in the chosen colour scheme.
The transformation of a newbuild from construction to completion.
Illustrations of the Swift.
Illustrations of a row of terraced houses, and a farmhouse.
The final video by the Why Agency.
Narration by Hannah Bourne-Taylor.
Music and Sound Design by Dan Tarbuck / Bleach Productions.
